Hey,

been struggling creatively of late and not been able to motivate myself to draw as much as i'd like. SO in an endeavour to push myself to draw more I've joined a daily sketch Challenge over on Deviant Art. The basic premise is that each day a new character is selected and some reference art posted on the Outcast forums. Then its up to to the people who wanna contribute to produce a sketch of said character.

Its run by those nice folks at Outcast studios so it should be fun.

The first one I'm doing is for Ragman so here it is.

My Comic Journey – Part 2: The Beano & Dandy

From reading the cartoons in the Sunday post I progressed onto getting the Beano and the Dandy. Both these weekly comics were filled with lots of 1 or 2 page stories featuring some really British comic book characters. Dennis the Menace (Not to be confused with his blonde American counterpart), Mini the Minx, The Bash Street Kids, Lord Snooty, The numskulls, Desperate Dan, Billy Whiz, Korky the Kat, Hungry Horace and various other. I even remember reading Bananaman in the Dandy.

I collected these for a few years until I discovered that the stories never seemed to change.
There was never any real progress with the characters. Every week there would be a set up, then the gag then normally some kind of moral. Although both these books were published by DC Thomson (the same people who publish the Sunday Post referred to in part one of this journey) the character never went anywhere. Don’t get me wrong I loved these for a few years but as I grew the books never grew with me. It was a shame really because some of the character that appeared in the Beano and the Dandy were pretty iconic. There’s even a statue of Desperate Dan in Dundee City centre.

I guess that now much of the stuff that these characters got up to would be considered totally and utterly non PC. Dennis the Menace was basically a bully who would beat up this little softie character every week promoting anti-social behaviour. I wonder if they have updated the series for today I bet Dennis would be on an ASBO and probably have a drug habit with a pregnant teenage girlfriend or something. As for desperate Dan I’m sure he used to smoke big cigars and his favourite food was Cow pie which had the horns sticking from the pie crust.

Oh the joys of my childhood, no wonder I turned out so messed up. Hah ha.

My Comic Journey – Part 1: The Sunday Post.

I don’t remember what age I was when I started reading comics, but I was very young probably about 5 or 6. Like most kids in Scotland in the early eighties my first real appreciation for comics came every Sunday when I would get a hold of the Sunday Post and get to see what Oor Wullie and the Broons and been up to.

On a Sunday morning I would get up and go downstairs always drawn by the smell of breakfast and coffee. My Dad would have been to the paper shop to get the Sunday Papers and rolls for breakfast. I remember the Sunday Post being a huge Broadsheet paper that made me stretch every time I wanted to turn a page. I would eagerly turn to the cartoons page where you had to then turn the paper on its side and would read the Broons’ then flip over and read Oor Wullie.

The Broons were a Scottish family consisting of the Mum, the Dad, 5 sons and 3 daughters or for those of you who care; Paw, Maw, Joe, Hen, Daphne, Maggie, Horace, The Twins and the Bairn. Oh and don’t forget Grandpaw. The family all lived together, I always presumed, in a flat and got up to lots of various capers. I enjoyed the Broons but to me it was the set up to getting to my favourite “Oor Wullie”
Wullie or William was a little boy who I always thought was around the same age as me, I had no idea at the time I was 5 or 6 that Wullie had been that age for about 40 years. The thing I remember most about Wullie was that he loved 3 things; His bucket, Fighting and fish and chips.

I think that this must be where my love of black and white artwork comes from.

The Sunday Post is a Scottish Sunday Newspaper Published by DC Thomson.

Now this wont be all that popular of an opinion but the reason I'm not a huge fan of Frank Quitely's art is that it reminds me of the Broons and Oor Wullie. I think the style worked on those comical characters but I don't think it works to well on Batman or Superman. just me ranting a bit I did dig his Authority stuff though . .

Hey there,
Just thought I drop by and spread some information.
During one of my frequent visits to DeviantArt to check out what my favourite DA artist had been up to lately I came across a journal entry from BlasterKid(Rich Johnson). He asked was telling about how he got into collecting comics and asking others to tell him how they did it. It was interesting. I started to type my reply but before I knew it I had started rambling on and on about stuff I used to buy as a kid and the stuff I buy now. I realized it was too much for a journal reply and had the idea to do it on my blog.

I thought I could make a feature of it and have some pictures and reference links so that anyone who reads it could see my journey in comics and maybe go check out some of the stuff that makes me the fan that I am.

This will be my own journey so there will be stuff that I’ll slate and call crap but that’s just my opinion, other people may have found it amazing. On the other hand there will be stuff I’ll rave about and I’m sure that people will have found it really bad, but that’s part if the beauty of comics. There is stuff out there for everyone – like marmite!!

Without further ado lets get going.

Some Character Designs

These two pages are design concepts for an online comic i'm working on (don't worry. I'll announce it here when its online) hahaha like you care!!!

The first is for a character called Kain. He was badly disfigured as a child and wears the mask to hide his scars. He;s a cool character that i came up with years ago back in high school with my best bud at the time Alan Mac. Wonder what he's up to now? He had some great ideas for comic books. well they were great when we were 15 or 16.

Second character is called Lion. Been trying for years to come up with a better name but this one just sticks and suits. in my head anyway. He's and extremely powerful character who is super strong and pretty invulnerable with a healing factor type thing. He is also a were-cat type thing and he has the ability to teleport via his sentient living metal forearm.

I know that my beautiful wife Clare is doing most of the work cooking up this little bun, but it as a great sense of achievement for me. I've always been good at breaking and destroying things. but this creating life thing seems pretty cool so far.

Just a quick stop to alert the world that the second coming is happening sometime around 6th of June next year. There will be a new Holden on the block. We don't know if its a boy or a girl yet but I'm sure little H will be just awesome.

We had our first (and probably only) scan on Wednesday and all is fine with baby. Mom on the other hand needs some kind of mood drugs to stop the hormones(hahaha) only jokin. she's fine too(smile if you're reading this babe).

So, got my copy of FM2008. So i guess I'll see you all in a year or so.

Only joking. I ain't played it yet still got a few things i want to do to my current team on FM2007. 10 Scottish Leagues in a row, 9 Champions Leagues in a row. 9 World club championships, 9 European super cups, 1 UEFA cup. 10 Scottish Cups and 10 League cups. My Gers team is the most dominant force ever.

Been catching up on Powers lately. someone needs to make this into a TV show or a movie. Heroes is good and all that but this would blow it away. love the way it just changes direction but keeps the old direction going too. the character interaction is great and after a couple of pages you feel like you know a newly introduced character. Bendis is really at the top of his game on this book. and the art, Oeming is probably one of the best artists in the business. He ain't no Jim lee (who is?) but then again he does something completely different. Love his stuff.

Hey,
Not been doing any art lately. Was in the hospital for a wee bit then when i came out I found out that my beautiful wife was pregnant.

I've just about picked myself up off the floor (We are totally over the moon).

So anyway to keep things frsh on here I thought I'd ramble on about something or other.

Doc Martin. Moday Nights ITV 9pm
This is a TV show that i should really hate. Nothing seems to happen in a nowhere town between people that i have no interest in but somehow i like it. It may be the way Martin Clunes plays the charater but i really enjoy watchin this little TV gem. Give it a go.

Rangers beat Barcelona in thrilling 0-0 game.
As you can guess by the heading I'm a blue nose. Dont hold it aginst me though. I watched a great display from my team last night and an average display from Barcelona. Alan Hutton is turning out to be one of the finest Right Wingbacks to come out of scotland ever!! there have been time over the last few years I've wanted to string him up for getting sent off and getting involved etc etc. but this season, and the second half of last season, he has been playing out his skin. In my opinion he deserved the man of the match award last night and on saturday past.

Where is my damn copy of Football manager 2008. The wife ordered it ages ago and it still ain't here. This postal strike has really messed things up.

We all feel we don't get paid enough but come on all these strikes are achieving finally giving businesses and the public a boot up the arse to go find another parcel/postal service. There are gonna be a ot of unemployed postman soon.

Hate this character. Always have. always thought of him as a cross between Batman and Wolverine. Guess its also my dislike of Jim Valentino's art. He's a pro and I respect his contribution to comics and Image comics as a whole but personally i don't like his style.

Wildcats - Zealot

Hey,

This is Zealot from Wildcats or WildC.A.T.s. I remember when the first issue came out it totally blew me away. the art was the best I'd ever seen. I was a bit gutted that Jim was no longer drawing the X-Men but the First issue of Wildcats more than made up for it.

Ya know I am a huge Wildstorm fan and have been following all the titles since Image started. I am avoiding the horror line that they are doing but apart from that I tend to get everything. on that note. WTF!!! Gen 13 is rubbish. Great character an all but they seem to be killing them slowly. I was a fan of Gail Simone and I love Tranquility but make those characters cool again please. While I'm ranting.

More Wildcats, more Wildcats, more Wildcats etc etc you get the idea.

I don't much care for the All star B & R, Although the art is great. I'd much rather see Jim drawing his own creations. I'm not gonna get into the whole late thing. I don't care if Jim ain't drawn it yet or Morrison ain't wrote it yet. just hurry up and get it out.

Anyway. . . . . . (pause for breath)

Cyberforce - Ripclaw

Hey all. Thats maybe a bit of lie. I have no idea how many if any people actually visit my blog. Right now I dont care, I'm just having fun uploading all these wee sketches and making silly comments. Thats what all this is about, right?

Anyway, this is a sketch of Ripclaw from Cyberforce. I used to get this title when it came out in 1992 or whatever. Got every issue. It was fun. It launced the career of a few of the Top Cow Studio artist including Turner, Finch, Benitez and others. They all did pencil assists on this title before moving onto their own books.

Silvestri does have an eye for talent. Mind you if you have his talent why look for more he is an amazing artist.

Time to move on from Youngblood and onto one of the best characters and most original series in comics today.

I've been a fan of this title since it started. I somehow lost most of the series (moving house, I think someone nicked them, cause that was the only stuff missing. Hope they enjoyed them as much as me). Bought all the trades again and love it as much as I used to.

Quiet weekend, did a spot of gardening, went to visit some friends who are moving house. Had lunch. Had a wee bottle of wine with the wife, oh and turned my hand to a spot of baking. I know that his costume seemed to change every issue but the original is what sticks in my head.
Just a thought. . . . The character used to fire psionic arrows with a stringless bow, right?

So why did he have a quiver full of real arrows?

Second in a series of some nostalgia. This is Chapel from Youngblood, or this is how I remember him looking. I remember a cool Jae Lee Pic that made him look like his face was an actual skull but I thought I'd go for how I remember the first incarnation of Youngblood.

This is the first in a series of fan art doodles I'm gonna be doing.

Here's Badrock from Youngblood. I remeber getting this comic way back in 1992 or something. Back when I thought Liefeld was good. Drew this from memory so dont know how accurate it is I just remember he looked like the thing a bit and had huge shoulder pads.

Thought I best start posting some art since that's the reason I've started this Blog.

This was a doodle I did one lunch hour. Its kinda looks like a rip-off of Hellboy but its not like I'm gonna publish a comic bout him. anyways let me know what ya all think. Some of you might have already seen this on My Deviantart pages.

Its sad.

Hi World,
This is me now with my own blog. This Internet is getting to be a confusing place. I have an MSN account, A deviantart account, a Myspace account, a Comicspace account and now this. Do ya really need all these different place to whore yourself.
